FAQ

What Happens During a Treatment Session?

During the initial consultation and treatment a discussion will be carried out regarding your presenting condition, general health and medical history. A full diagnosis will then be conducted by means of further discussion, palpation of the wrist pulse and abdomen and observation of the tongue. A treatment plan aimed at the root of the condition as well as the immediate symptoms will then be formed and a treatment will be carried out.

Is it safe?

Acupuncture is very safe. Any initial reactions such as tiredness or light-headedness are short lived and uncommon. The acupuncture needles used are small, fine, single-use (disposable) and sterile.

Does it hurt?

The feeling described by patients receiving acupuncture varies from no sensation to a tingling or mild aching sensation.

Here is an explanation from one of my patient’s experience of having acupuncture with me. (Mr B, teacher, age 52):

I went to Stuart with persistent pain caused by a slipped disc in my lower back. Physiotherapy, anti-inflammatories and pain killers had had little effect on the constant discomfort and reduction in mobility I was experiencing. I had never had acupuncture before and Stuart took the time to explain the basic theory behind the method he uses so that I was comfortable with the process I was about to go through. He carefully described the sensations I would probably encounter so that there were no surprises and he was spot-on in every respect. Some of the needles induced a feeling of ‘weight’ where they were placed, some gave an electrical sensation in another part of my body, while others felt that they warmed an area of my skin. None of the sensations were unpleasant or could be described as pain.

On completion of the treatment, Stuart carefully explained what I could reasonably expect in terms of pain relief and over what time period. That evening, although taking things very steadily, I was pain-free for the first time in months and felt like a spring lamb with a far wider range of movement.

Stuart’s approach is highly professional and understated. He seems to understand how much of the technical and philosophical background I want to hear and the way he speaks and explains gave me absolute confidence in what he was doing.
